Butterflies & Rainbows

Now it was time for Zofia's birthday and Christa commissioned Kayla to create a "butterflies and rainbows" cake. Kayla baked this yummy yellow cake, covered it in yellow buttercream, then created a red & orange basketweave.
The spotlight feature is the fondant butterfly handpainted with an stained-glass affect.

Client review: "it was beautiful and delicious!! One of the parents who does catering was so impressed with the stain glass on the butterfly!!"

Let's go Lakers!

Pam, the guest-of-honor / recipient of Kayla's famous "castle cake" which she created with Lorna Jahn, came back to Kayla's Cookies & Crumbs for her son's 16th birthday. A big LA Lakers fan, Aaron's quarter-sheet cake is chocolate with orange and purple buttercream icing.

Kayla used wooden dowels, plywood and gallon jub lid safeties to create hoops at both ends. The court lines are made with purple icing and the L.A. Lakers graphic is orange fondant with purple details.

The reviews are in:
Pam says "Cake was awesome!!! I know where I'll be getting my cakes, etc. from now on!!!!!!"
And Jennifer, a guest at the party, says "This was the best chocolate cake ever because it was so moist! Tell Kayla that (my daughter) doesn't even eat cake but I let her have a bite of mine and she asked for Pam for a big piece and ate the entire thing!! SUPER YUMMY!!!!"

2 Thumbs Up!

Kayla was commissioned by repeat customer Christa to create a cake for Bella's 9th birthday. Bella was going to celebrate with friends by watching a movie.

Kayla baked a 14" round yellow cake iced in buttercream frosting and then decorate along the sides like a movie reel. The top features a clapperboard image and 3-D popcorn created with colored mini marshmallow and a lot of creativity!
Christa said "The cake was fantabulous!!! It was so good and the kids loved it!"

Bunko!!!

The Carter Sisters were planning a big Bunko & Elvis party for their mama's 70th birthday party and commissioned Kayla to create three square dice cakes to go with the bunko theme.

Kayla made a carrot with cream cheese filling, a white with white filling and a devil's food with chocolate filling. Using white and black fondant she created three dice cakes...

Kristine, our client, said the cakes were BIG hit. And considering Elvis was at the party, I'd say the cakes getting attention must have meant they were good.

Mad Scientist

Kayla was asked to create a birthday cake for Katie's Mad Scientist party. Katie wanted a chocolate cake that "wasn't too girly" and her favorite color is green.

I'll let you decide whether Katie liked the cake or not...

Katie's mom said "Please tell Kayla thank you so much for the wonderful cake. The Mad Science leader loved it too! They all agreed it was the best scientist they had seen on a cake." Megan said "It was yummy! And exactly what we were looking for." Thanks Megan & Katie!

Virginia Big Cookie Project 06/2010

Kayla was asked to baked five big cookies, each in the shape of the Commonwealth of Virginia for a 4th grade class project at Echo Lake Elementary School. Using a template and sugar cookie batter, she created the "blank slate"...

The students then used various edible items to represent the regions of Virginia...
And before they got to break off a piece and enjoy their creation, they had to label each region along with descriptions.

After the project, the class teacher wrote to say "the students LOVED the cookies today. They were PERFECT!!!!!!! Please tell your young chef she did an amazing job and just might have a standing gig at our yearly VA Big Cookie extravaganza if she would like. We really had a great time with this activity today, so thank you so much for what you did!"

Pageant Cake 01/10

Kayla was commissioned to create the cake for the Miss Piedmont Region 2010 pageant. The client requested a white quarter-sheet cake with pink, purple & green decorations. The client wanted to display a pageant crown on the cake and requested that Kayla create the design around a space for this element.

Bridge Cake

In June 2010, Kayla was asked to create a cake for a summertime celebration of a local engineering firm. This particular department works on bridges, so Kayla devised this 3-D replica of a bridge over a sea of blue buttercream frosting. The bridge is not edible, made of wood, lollipop sticks and pipe cleaner. The cake is a 14" round marble cake.

Customer Review: " They all loved it! And tasted great! Giving Kayla's Cookies & Crumbs a big two thumbs up! Thanks!" Thank YOU Sarah!!!

Mexican Fiesta!!!

Kayla was asked to create a cake for a celebratory dinner at a Mexican restaurant. She baked a chocolate round layer cake with colored buttercream icing and then used a variety of techniques including a fondant 3-D cactus, flower with colored tips, colorful border and painted 3-D fondant maraca.

Tea Party / Fondant

Another one of our favorite customers, Zofia, requested a Kayla's Cookies & Crumbs creation for her tea party. Kayla created the diamond-weave pattern with fondant topped with a hand-made tea pot.
Zofia's mom reports: "he cake was another stellar creation. All the parents at the Tea Party were not only impressed with the design but fell in love with the flavor. The kids enjoyed peeling off the icing and eating it!
Thank you again for delivering such a wonderful work of art to eat!!"

French Poodle

This customer loves creative, personalized cakes, which are one of Kayla's specialties. For her daughter's 5th birthday, she requested this fun French poodle cake -- Kayla's biggest ever! The customer was very, very pleased (once we figured out how to fit it into her car LOL.)

Beach!!!

One of our favorite customers returned in November for this fun beach-themed birthday cake. According to Kayla this chocolate cake was "even better than the vanilla!"

Keyboard Cookie Cake

Sue was making plans for her son Alec's birthday and a friend referred her to Kayla's Cookies and Crumbs (thanks Karen!) Sue said to decorate the cake with a keyboard or computer. Kayla created this double-layer chocolate chip cookie with white chocolate filling and a piano keyboard around the greeting.

Sue reported back that "We did enjoy the cake. Kayla did a great job. This reading teacher made a mistake in telling you to have her do a keyboard cake. In my mind, I thought everyone knows that Alec is a computer guru. I was thinking computer keyboard and your musical family was thinking piano keyboard. Luckily, Alec thought the whole thing was funny and took pictures of the cake to show off to his friends."

Lesson learned to show design before making the cake...and so thankful for customers with good humor!

Football!

Kayla made this football-themed cake for Lucas' birthday, 12/09.

Musical Cookie Cake 1/10

Kayla decided to make this chocolate chip cookie cake for a band-mates birthday. Happy birthday Kristen, Tucker's 2010 drum major, trombonist & bassoonist!
